A. At that time there was a lot of money in regards to trade between the islands, the mainland, and Europe. Sugar from the islands, tobacco from the Southern states, rum from the New England area (made from island sugar), and all to get supplies needed from England. They didn't trade for money at that time. Tobacco, sugar, and eventually other southern products such as cotton or indigo would require a ton of labor. The riches derived from said products helped turn a blind eye to the moral implications of slavery. And of course created another money making business. The slave trade. Eventually, a budding new government would create an economy that would possibly crumble without the extra hands to harvest the huge crops. Added to the… [cont.]

English hw help...poem?
Q. DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so, For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow, Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me. From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee, 5 Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow, And soonest our best men with thee doe goe, Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie. Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell, 10 And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well, And better then thy stroake; why swell'st thou then; One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally, And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die. A. personification: death is not actually a person. apostrophe (talking to somebody who is not a person): donne talks to Death (death isn't a real person). synecdoche (talking about a part when you mean the whole): 'bones' to mean 'people'. metaphor: thou art slave to Fate (death is not actually a slave). metonymy: poppie or charmes (donne actually means 'anaesthetics'). rhetorical question: 'why swell'st thou then' (death isn't actually shrugging off all donne's objections, it just seems tobe). oxymoron: 'death, thou shalt die' (death cannot die, obviously).

A. In short the poem is about death (as in the angel of), and how ultimately death will be overcome. It seeks to belittle the powers of death, perhaps in an effort to find solace. The last lines of the poem tells us that "one short sleepe past, wee wake eternally", in other words after you die you will once again rise to live eternally (Christian theology). It derides the powers of death as subject to other powers such as Fate, Chance and the actions of men (war and struggles). Making it far less great and less deserving of the fear associated with it.
